On May 9, 1691, the Edo Shogunate granted authorization for the operation of the Besshi Copper Mines. A Shinto ritual is held on May 9 every year, attended by representatives of eleven Sumitomo Group companies that have factories or offices in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture.
