Sumitomo Group Public Affairs Committee strives to support college student’s negotiation skills, assist in upgrading higher education and contribute to global human resource development through the Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition.

The 6th intercollegiate negotiation competition was held at Sophia University on December 1st and 2nd, 2007.
In addition to 14 schools who previously were part of the event, including: Osaka University, Gakushuin University, Kyushu University, Kyoto University, Keio University, Sophia University, Chuo University, University of Tokyo, Tohoku University, Doshisha University, Nagoya University, Hitotsubashi University, Hokkaido University and Waseda University which had participated in the previous competition, the University of Sydney participated again to form Team Australia jointly with University of New South Wales which were part of the competition for the first time as well Ritsumeikan University. In total, 250 undergraduate and graduate students from 18 universities performed enthusiastically.

Problem setting and competition outline (Red vs. Blue companies)

The Red Company is an agriculture producer, processor and a distributor in the Negorand country which is classified as a developing country, and the Blue Company is a listed as centering on three businesses within the areas of food, environment and precious metals of the Arbitoria country which is classified as an advanced country.
The issues of the Round A “arbitration” in the first day was beef dealings between the two companies, as well as the points on using growth hormone and technical challenges with the use of E-mail. In the Round B “Negotiation” on the second day, the issues of debate were the interchange and revision of the price of corn for a long-term contract, injustices and problems with the quality control of the employees at the Yellow Company, a third company which is a partner company.

Judges

Every year, the Sumitomo Public Affairs Committee receives assistance with the competition, this year they appreciated cooperation from people within judicial circles, professionals from each university as well as a Judicial Affairs Division from various corporations. As the competitions take place each year and students graduate, both male and female alumni return to the competition and now serve in various capacities such as judges for the competition.
A guest speaker was asked to participate as well, Lucas Mistelis, professor from Queen Mary, University of London, gave a speech and is an expert of arbitration methods.

Results of the 6th Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition

This year team Australia successfully turned away possible revenge from the universities in Japan from the previous year by winning again to defend their title. Team Australia has now been victorious two years in a row.
